Recently, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) announced in its monthly journal Explorer that Professor Hu Qinhong from the School of Geosciences at China University of Petroleum(East China) was honored with the AAPG Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award to celebrate his outstanding contributions to the field of Nanoscale Rock Physics. Professor Hu Qinhong is the first Chinese scholar to receive this award.

Professor Hu Qinhong, a national high-level talent, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA). With over 30 years of working experience at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, United States Department of Energy National Laboratories, and universities, he joined the School of Geosciences at UPC in 2018. He is currently based at the National Key Laboratory of Deep Oil and Gas, leading the“Nanoscale Rock Physics and Carbon-Neutrality Energy Geology”research team. His research focuses on microscopic pore structures and macroscopic mass transport in porous media, fracture-matrix interactions, and efficient extraction and storage of fluids (water-oil-gas-heat) in low-perme ability geological formations, all within the context of the“Dual Carbon”goals. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Marine and Petroleum Geology and chairman of the Energy Geology Division of the GSA. His previous accolades include the Outstanding Research Achievement from the University of Texas at Arlington, the First China Petroleum Science Top Ten Paper, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Outstanding Contribution Award.
The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), founded in 1917, is the world’s largest and most influential organization for petroleum geologists. Dedicated to advancing research on petroleum, natural gas, and other subsurface fluids and mineral resources, it currently has nearly 40,000 members from 129 countries and regions worldwide. The Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award is AAPG’s highest honor in scientific research, which was established to recognize extraordinary achievements in petroleum geoscience. Since its inception in 2009, the award has been presented to 30 scholars, with a maximum of two recipients selected annually.
