Program Orientation
This program is aligned with China's national energy strategy and the demands of socio-economic development. It highlights a distinctive focus on energy and regional economics. It aims to cultivate high-level, interdisciplinary professionals who possess solid theoretical foundations in economics and specialized knowledge of the energy industry, with the ability to apply economic research methods to solve complex real-world problems.
Historical Development
The Economics program began enrolling undergraduates in 2001 and master's students in Industrial Economics in 2004. The school now holds the right to confer a master’s degree in the first-level discipline of Applied Economics, as well as the professional Master of Finance (MF). In the fourth round of national discipline evaluations in 2017, the supporting Applied Economics discipline received a C rating and ranked fifth in Shandong Province.

Leveraging the university's strength in energy-related disciplines, the program integrates courses and practical experiences related to energy economics, aiming to develop professionals who can serve key areas of China’s energy development strategy.§Integration of industry, academia, and research:

It enhances students' quantitative analysis skills and interdisciplinary thinking through an integrated curriculum that emphasizes mathematics, statistics, and engineering logic.
Graduate Prospects
In recent years, the employment rate of economics graduates has remained above 90%, reaching nearly 100% by the end of each academic year.
§Over 30% of graduates pursue postgraduate studies at top universities, such as Peking University, Renmin University of China, Xiamen University, as well as internationally at institutions like Erasmus University Rotterdam, Durham University, and the University of Sydney.
§Employment opportunities span across major energy companies (e.g., CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC), financial institutions (e.g., PBoC, Bank of China), tech and manufacturing enterprises (e.g., Huawei, Inspur), and real estate firms (e.g., Wanda, Evergrande). Employment locations are primarily concentrated in Shandong, gradually expanding to coastal and inland provinces across China.
