From June 29 to July 7, the School of Economics and Management (SEM) of China University of Petroleum (East China), in collaboration with its alumni enterprise Weide Energy Co., Ltd. (Zhoushan, Zhejiang), successfully held the second session of the Energy and Chemical Finance Training Program. The program brought together 15 industry experts from the energy and chemical finance sector and focused on research and trading practices in spot and futures markets. A total of 32 full-time graduate students from four different schools participated.

The opening ceremony was held on June 29 in Room 105, South Teaching Building. Attendees included Chen Wenjun, Director of the University’s Career Services Center, and Hu Yigui, Director of the Office of Cooperation and Development and the Serving Shandong Office. Professor Wang Jun, Party Secretary of SEM, delivered opening remarks. Wei Dawei, General Manager of Weide Energy and an alumnus of UPC, gave a mobilization speech. Professor Li Yongbo, Director of the Master of Finance program, and several alumni instructors also attended.

In his speech, Professor Wang Jun stressed that the program was designed with high intensity, rigorous standards, and rich content. He encouraged participants to embrace the “big picture” of national energy strategy, develop strong analytical and financial skills, and uphold professionalism and ethical responsibility in financial practice. Wei Dawei, speaking on behalf of the enterprise mentors, urged students to view the program as a starting point for deepening their industry knowledge and practical abilities. He also pledged 1 million RMB in margin capital from Weide Energy to support the program’s live trading sessions.

Between June 29 and July 4, students completed a series of lectures and trading simulations. Alumni and industry experts delivered lectures on topics such as refining and petrochemicals, futures balance sheet analysis, refinery risk management using futures, the logic and applications of options, and the global refining market and crude oil pricing mechanisms. Sessions also covered case studies on financial tools empowering industrial operations, research methods in energy finance, and practical trading experience.

On July 7, participants visited Jinneng Chemical (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. and the Qingdao Haiguan Science and Technology Industrial Research Institute. The field trips allowed students to experience real-world corporate operations, deepening their understanding of how financial tools are applied within the energy and chemical industries.

According to the training plan, students will now engage in a month-long group-based trading practice. Upon completion and evaluation, they will graduate from the program in September. After graduation, SEM and the alumni enterprise will continue to support participants through lectures, networking events, internships, and job referrals. Building on this program, SEM aims to further upgrade its industry–education integration model, providing a stronger platform for cultivating talent in the digital energy economy and energy management fields, and supporting graduates in achieving high-quality employment.
